Taylor: “I don’t think married people can be happy.”

To which I, obnoxiously, replied:

I think they can
my parents are happy
my grandparents are happy
I can’t really KNOW the other couples I’ve met
but that’s what marriage exists for
it’s not that you found your “soulmate” or whatever
it’s that you found another human who genuinely CARES about you
and both of you say, we don’t need anyone else, because time won’t deteriorate this
An unhappiness results from problems
complications
sometimes those are big, sometimes those are small
the smaller ones are like bumps on the road
after the jolt, you keep trucking along
but some people get these problems in their marriages that are like cliffs
and then they’ve got to either bail out and leave each other, or stay together and hit the ground hard
but the existence of black doesn’t negate the existence of white
the bad marriage may overwhelm the good ones, but the good ones exist
and they are holy holy holy holy
and they are wonderous
I’ve met some marriages that make me want to LIVE
and I’m being so honest and open right now
it’s those moments when I realize how GOOD humanity can be
that I remember who I am
I remember, oh yeah, I want to be kind and funny and witty and clever
and I want to do it to get rid of unhappiness
I want what this marriage has
a glow of purity
and sometimes the clouds march in
and they dilute the glow
but it’s there
and all rains come to pass
so you find that one person
the one that creates the glow
and you latch on
and you steer clear of cliffs
and you fucking fight those clouds
because life throws them at you
but yes
I believe married people can be happy for the rest of their lives
not every one
but they can
those magical few
